What is surrogacy?
Surrogacy has come up as a gift for parents who could otherwise never experience the miracle of birth of their child. It is that wonder of technology which has turned lives of many people into a bliss. Surrogacy and a Surrogate mother stands to be the epitome of ecstasy for parents who would have never been able to explore this joy of life but for their surrogate mother. Having said so, you could very well make out the reverence and love a surrogate mother would be getting. Well, se totally deserves all of that.
Now, let us tell you about the types of surrogacy available so you can make the right choice:
There is gestational surrogacy, wherein eggs from the mother are fertilized with the father’s/donor’s sperm and then the embryo is placed into the uterus of the surrogate, who carries the child to term and delivers it. In this way, the surrogate mother is only a medium of birth and she is not biologically related to the child.
Who opts for Gestational surrogacy?
Woman who has been ovulating with health eggs otherwise but cannot conceive for medical reasons like:
- Malformation of or infection in the womb
- Absence or removal of womb by hysterectomy
- Recurring miscarriages
- Repeated failure of IVF
A case could be when man is not able to function properly sexually but has a healthy sperm count otherwise.
This is not the only way, sometimes this apparently simple process gets really complicated and has dynamics of combinations like- an egg donor, a sperm donor, the gestational carrier and the intended parents. This might happen in case where the intended mother and father are fit for donating egg and sperm respectively for fertilization.
Then there is traditional surrogacy, wherein the birth mother is also the genetic mother of the child. Here, her egg is fertilized using the sperm from the intended father or a donor. This is done through artificial insemination and she carries her own baby.
Why opts for Traditional surrogacy?
Gay or lesbian couples mostly opt for this procedure. This might also happen in case where the intended mother and father are fit for donating egg and sperm respectively for fertilization.
Why to consider surrogacy?
A major reason to consider surrogacy over adoption is that the child you will be having will have your DNA. The child will look like your husband will talk like you. I mean who does not want that. Your daughter should be your reflection and your son should have your husband’s countenance. This is the reason people go for surrogacy and not for adoption.
